Growing Well is an innovative mental health charity that supports people experiencing mental ill-health to activate their own recovery and live a healthier life. At Growing Well, the activity IS the therapy and the activity is growing vegetables, herbs and fruit at three different sites in Cumbria.

People can attend one day a week for up to a year, setting goals, rebuilding confidence and learning new skills in a safe, supportive, non-judgemental environment. Being able to talk and work side by side with people experiencing similar difficulties is key.

Now operating at 3 sites in Cumbria, Growing Well provides meaningful activity, social connection, opportunities for learning and space for reflection and recovery.

Established in 2004 at Low Sizergh near Kendal, Growing Well has helped hundreds of people recover from mental health challenges, using a unique approach to recovery through supported activity in the outdoors, within a horticultural social enterprise.

At Growing Well, everyone works together to grow, pick and pack an impressive range of vegetables, herbs and fruit, which is then sold via a crop share (vege box scheme) and to a range of local customers (farms shops, cafes, restaurants, community food shares).

Everything they do is supported and guided by an experienced team of growers and mental health support staff. As an independent registered charity, Growing Well relies on grants, donations and community fundraising to supplement the income they get from selling their sensational seasonal produce and to meet their running costs.

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future.

As a Society, we are made up of people with dementia, carers, trusted experts, campaigners, researchers and clinicians. We are the UK’s largest collective force of people with unparalleled knowledge and over 40 years of experience addressing the biggest challenges facing people living with dementia.
